Bill Maas | Secretary

Dr. Bill Maas is a public health consultant. Among his clients is the Pew Children’s Dental Campaign, an initiative seeking to change state and federal policy to improve access to dental care for disadvantaged children. Bill also is a clinical professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. In 2010, he retired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where from 1998-2009 he was director of the Division of Oral Health. From 1997 to 2001 Dr. Maas served as the chief dental officer of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) as an Assistant Surgeon General. He was a member of the team that prepared the seminal Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health in America. Earlier, Bill served in the Indian Health Service and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Throughout his PHS career he developed and disseminated science-based, policy-relevant information needed by patients, clinicians, health plans, purchasers, and policy makers to make better oral health care decisions. Bill’s dental degree is from The University of Michigan; his MPH and MS in health policy and management were earned at Harvard University. Bill has resided in North Bethesda since 1983 and has been a member of MDAC since 2011, serving as Member-at-Large on the Board of Directors prior to his current position of Secretary
