Literacy and Education

I n partnership with the Maryland Office of Oral Health, MDAC created a national award-winning multimedia, bilingual oral health literacy campaign called Healthy Teeth and Healthy Kids (HTHK). Since 2012, more than 400,000 educational brochures in both English and Spanish have been distributed. Additionally, more than 200 stories have been placed in the media, resulting in more than five million media impressions about the campaign and the importance of oral health for children and pregnant women. MDAC distributed an oral health curriculum developed for Head Start teachers to all 186 public libraries in Maryland, as well as seven libraries within the University System of Maryland. Public librarians may use this curriculum to guide children's story time and educate them on simple oral health practices whereas university librarians may share this guide with students to be used for community outreach.
